BLOWING SMOKE

Directors ChairFilm Projector

Blowing Smoke is a anti-smoking group that is comprised totally of kids with a administration of adults. However the kids make all the major decisions. The kids come from a range of different ages. We came together to put information out on how Tobacco Companies are deceitfully advertising in movies through the concept of product placement.

We want to show hard evidence that  tobacco is being placed in movies that kids are interested in. To prove this we have had a team of kids watching and reviewing movies for their tobacco content. Below is how they evaluate movies. They watch movies that are in theatres and they watch movies rented from Premiere Video. Our goal is to educate other people, whether they be adults or kids, that tobacco has no place in our society.

How we Evaluate Movies

How often is tobacco used? – In some movies no one uses tobacco in others it can be in almost every  scene. A way to compare movies is to note each time tobacco is used on screen.

Is a specific brand promoted?- The director may use a specific brand as a prop;   it may be an actor's  personal preference; or it may be an advertisement. When you see a specific brand it is likely that the tobacco industry is paying for the use.

What is a movie Incident? An incident is the use, or implied use, of a tobacco product. A person does  not actually have to use a tobacco product to constitute a incident. For example a person handling an unlit cigar equals one incident. Here are examples
